In this small article, I will show how to secure Windows 2000 to the maximum to use it e.g. in a vintage environtment, because the System is outdated and should not be used in a productive way. Because it is not possible to do this for every language, I try link to the english version of the files, otherwise they are the german pendants.
If you use the Windows 2000 with a service pack below Service Pack 4 (such as the original release), you will need to apply Service Pack 4: (file name: W2KSP4_EN.EXE: 129 MB) (NOTE: If you already have installed Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 integrated, skip this step.)
How To Update W2K
COMPONENTS REQUIRED TO ACCESS WINDOWS UPDATE
- Download the full version of the Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 installer: here
- The latest version of the Windows Update Agent (datestamp 2012-06-04 18:43) will not work correctly with Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 2000 (or even Windows XP/Windows Server 2003). If you go to the Windows Update website and see a dialogue box asking you to install the Microsoft Windows Component Publisher, you need to select No and close Internet Explorer. If you select Yes, then Windows Update will not work correctly and will most likely cause Internet Explorer 6 to crash, you will most likely have to re-start the Windows 2000 installation from scratch all over again. To work around this, you will need to do the following:
-
- Download and install Update Rollup 1 version 2 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (KB891861): http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18997 (file name: Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.EXE, download size: 31.2 MB) (DE Version) After you install Update Rollup 1 v2, you need to restart the computer. By installing Update Rollup 1 v2, this will stop Windows Update from crashing Internet Explorer 6 even if the browser is no longer officially supported.
- Download WinZip. I recommend downloading WinZip version 8.1 SR-1 (datestamp: 2003-02-11 08:10:00; filesize: 1.81 MB): winzip81.exe
We don't need to write this article step by step til the end. There is a compilated ISO with all the Updates to the last, because Windows Update Function doesn't work anymore. So if you have setup your VM with W2K, insert the ISO and install everything and you are good to go. The file you should look for is called: wsusoffline-w2k-deu_2010-07-11.iso
- Download - ISO File (730 MB)
